Parkman Veterans Park History

In the early 1940’s, the Mothers Club of Parkman (precursor to our Parkman Chamber of Commerce) along with the newly formed Parkman Veterans Club got together to design a tribute park for all of the veterans from Parkman Ohio. The location was designated on the south west corner of Rt 422 and Rt 88 / Rt 528 in front of the old Parkman Post Office and across the street from the Parkman Gazebo. This was considered the center of our Parkman Township.

The original wooden Parkman Veterans Memorial (center photo) was located in the same spot the current stone tribute (right photo) is. The original wooden version listed an honor roll of all the WWII veterans who served. The wooden tribute was replaced with the stone tribute in the early 1950s. The current stone tribute is more timeless and honors all veterans past and present.

In 2022, over 70 years later, the Parkman Veterans Park had an upgrade with new flagpoles representing each of the branches of the US military. The United States Flag in the center was also upgraded to a taller and more visual Old Glory. The landscape of the park was cleaned up from much overgrowth. New flower beds were planted that will give very colorful gardens in all of the seasons (spring, summer, and fall). In the winter, the park is decorated with holiday lighting.

The Parkman Veterans Park is still evolving, but it will continue to honor all of our veterans for many generations to come. The dedicated centerpiece for our town can be seen from any direction and is an honorable salute to those who serve our country.

On our Parkman website, there is also a veteran’s tribute page that honors by name each veteran from Parkman who had served our country and has passed on. This tribute list covers those all the way from the Revolutionary War to any current names. We also have our Memorial Day salutes that started in 2001 for each year.

We welcome any input and help to keep our veteran website tribute inclusive to our veterans.

Parkman Veterans Club
Established in 1946, as Parkman Veterans returned home from WWII, this club was a gathering place
to allow fellow members to recoup from the enduring the stress of such an experience. This club later was evolved into the Middlefield VFW Post 9768, that still exists to date.

Most of the founding members were very active within the Parkman community.
Thanks to all of Parkman’s Veterans
for their service to country and community!
